Luke Smithers Psychotherapy

IFS TherapY in New York

Meet Luke

I am a psychotherapist based in New York City. I hold a Master of Social Work from New York University and a Master of Arts in Religion from Yale University. I have completed clinical internships at Lenox Hill Hospital and the National Institute for the Psychotherapies. While interning at Lenox Hill Hospital, I received a Certificate in Contemplative Care from the New York Zen Center. I am a Level 1-trained Internal Family Systems (IFS) Practitioner. My therapeutic approach is compassionate and collaborative, focusing on creating a safe space for exploration and healing. My specialties include treating LGBTQIA+ individuals and couples.

My Approach

I approach each therapeutic encounter with reverence and humility, recognizing the inherent wisdom and resilience within each individual. My role is to serve as a compassionate guide, assisting clients in accessing their inner resources for healing and growth.

Drawing inspiration from the Zen Buddhist concept of “Big Mind,” I believe that within every person exists an unblemished, expansive essence capable of profound compassion and transformation. Regardless of the magnitude of challenges faced, we all possess an innate capacity for clarity and insight.

Together, we embark on a journey of self-discovery and exploration, fostering an environment of trust, compassion, and acceptance. Through this collaborative process, clients uncover their inner wisdom and cultivate a deeper understanding of themselves, empowering them to navigate life's complexities with resilience and grace.

Taking the courageous step to reach out for support marks the beginning of your healing journey. I understand that this decision may evoke a range of emotions—curiosity, hopefulness, fear, and concern. I am here to hold space for all aspects of your experience, supporting you with compassion and understanding as we navigate this journey together.

 How can I support you?
